PostHeaderIcon Does anyone know of a good childrens book dealing with car accidents. My grandson is 4. ?

He was involved in a serious car accident, and although physically he is fine, he's been having nightmares. He will be seeing a Play Therapist in 2 weeks, but if anyone knows of any age-appropriate books I can get in the mean time, I would be eternally grateful.

Hi, I’m sorry to hear what happened-unfortunately there’s not a great deal out there about the subject but i hope the books others have recommended aresuitable! Problem with books about other experiences is that it can make the situation seems worse and obviously differnet car accidents are unique eg: head on, injuries, mild tap, drunk driver, slippery road etc you dont want him to start fearing cars if he’s reading about too many bad things that can happen in them!

-Maybe do some roleplay buy some small cars and play with them-role play often gives children a safe medium to explore their emotions and begin to sort them out in their own heads! Also you can bring in storylines etc that are suitable.
-Make your own story-make his own book about what happened to him eg: "this is_______, when in his car ________happened…..he felt______" you can ask him to help fill in blanks about how it made him feel, what he remembers and then end with happy ending such as everyonewas safe, new car, new car seat etc so he cansee that life will be good and not scary again! you can even give character a different name so he can feel slightly more detached rather than feeling he’s reliving it!

    Hope things turn out well!
