depends on if it’s a boy or a girl really. as different genders probably will like different things.

12 is basically a teenager. what. 7th 8th grade. middle school? silly childrens books probably need to start giving way to more serious books with some more "thinking" elements in them.

when i was younger i remember my grandmother reading me/turning me on to jack london. adventure books. or nature books.

Hatchet. …i think gary paulson. something like that. is a classic. he has other books.

My side of the mountain. also…younger audience. i think it’s a set. basically. a "run away" sort of story. where a young boy survives in the woods.

also… if it’s a boy. and you’re not a prude. maybe some simple horror novels, or sci fi exposure.

(ie if he’s already deep into video games and action movies, might as well let him read decent horror and sci fi)

early stephen king. tears of the dragon, carrie, cujo, dark half.

simple story sci-fi …enders game. is a great story. about a young kid. has deeper connotations for adults. but kids can read it as. video games train genius kid to take on space aliens etc.

if the kid likes computers. neuromancer is great classic cyber punk reading. probably somewhat out there for 12 yr old. but i dunno. maybe doable.

also… the harry potter books. especially the first couple ones are really easy to read. basically retard reading. but quick paced and infinitely accessible.

    people shouldn’t sell kids short.

while the may not understand some of the deeper concepts of advanced novels. some of the great classic books. from a purely story telling standpoint are great.

i mean… would it be absurd to reccommend. Tom Sawyer, Call of the Wild/White Fang.

Also…classics like Rohl Dalh ..BFG is all time classic. James and the giant peach, witches,

    Charolette’s web.

From a fantasy standpoint. or dragons/elves etc. Hobbit/LotR may be a bit much.

but the Redwall series is probably doable for younger people. Or the Dragonlance stories (weis & hickman) etc.

Narnia books… have religious overtones. and most of those books aren’t all that great.

also… if it’s a 12 yr old boy. don’t under estimate comic books.

marvel/DC have great story arcs in trade paper back format. or just buy him comic books.

Wolverine ..his intro story where he fights in japan. X-men dark phoenix saga. the more recent 1990′s magneto story arc. Super man… his death, or the Kingdom Come stories. Dark knight series… Punisher. has great trade paper backs. Dark Horse comics has good titles. the Aliens/Predator franchise. Bartman/Predator Aliens/Superman. alternative comic companies. like Image comics. Spawn, Wildcats. etc. Even stand alone graphic novel series. Watchmen has come main stream now. Also…classic like Mauz is a holocaust novel in cartoon format. great to expose kids to hard subjects like that in accessible terms.

if it’s not a boy. i dunno. just telling you some of the things i read when i was younger.

and i tend to be an avid reader now adays.

I’ve heard Chronicles of Narnia is excellent for any age. I just rented them from the library and plan on starting this week :)
I really love anything by Madeleine L’engle, especially A Wrinkle In Time and the rest of the Time Quartet- it’s great for boys and girls, and really draws you in.

If you like fantasy stuff try "The Amazing Maurice and his educated rodents" by Terry Pratchett, also "The Wee Free Men" by the same author. If your interested in learning about life and philosophy try "Sophie’s World" by Jostien Gardner. Also "Watership Down" by Richard Adams is always a great read.
