Here are a couple of very useful links. If you can buy a copy of 2006 Childrens Writers & Illustrators Market, you will get a lot of additional information. The book is available from Amazon.com. I hope this helps!
Contact a publishing house.
Go to your local university English professors.
First you need to learn how to spell!
Grab the 2007 edition of the "Writer's Market" — it will tell you everything from agents to contests to magazine editors.
Prepare yourself for MANY rejections.
go to the children's book council website. that will get you started.
go to your local book store/library and look for the Writer's Market book…a new one should be coming out soon. They have an entire section on children's books, how to contact the agent, what to write in the cover letter, etc.
Audrey, you need two things.
You need to learn how to spell writer, then you need to go to Predators and Editors at the following link and learn how to send queries to a long list of Agents listed there with recommendations and warnings for some.
You can run a search on the internet for agents, but there are no guarantees.
After perfecting your story, I suggest sending it to as many publishers as you can. The Children's Book Council has the contact names and addresses of many of the publishers out there. There web site is:

I sent my first children's story out to many many publishing houses and got turned down, but happened to have an acquaintence in Los Angeles who is "lending" me her agent.
I wish you the best!
Go to the library and check out "The 2006 Writer's Market". It will give you a long list of agents to fit your needs.
